Internal Research & Development Projects:

We are currently working on various internal R&D concepts including products such as:

  • Novel Suspension Components:
  • A series of front and rear control arms initially to be released onto the BMW M2 (F87), M3 (F80) and M4 (F82) platforms. These are marketed towards racing teams and high-end consumer offering lower weight, improved performance and custom kinematics over the OEM control arms - they will be offered in two materials; CNC milled Aluminium and an innovative new composite technology with a lower price and environmental impact than current carbon fibre technology.

  • Aerodynamic Devices:

  • Front Splitter
    An aerodynamic front splitter for use with the RenaultSport Megane 3 platform to offer improved aerodynamic performance over the OEM package; with CFD verified design implemented to control the flow of air above and below the car body and integral brake cooling ducts to address the factory shortcomings experienced by track users. This is a project undertaken in conjunction with AP Motorsport.

    Rear Wing:
    We have designed a single element rear wing for road car based clubsport competition. Extensive CFD was undertaken to verify and optimise designs with this project, with focus on maximising -L/D. The outcome was a very efficient wing platform that can also be adapted to other categories. A brief write-up of the development process behind this wing can be found here.

  • Motorsport Engineering Consultancy

    Consulting faculty and students on the design, build and planning of their FSAE Formula Student 2020 competition entry.

    Covering all aspects of the development process such as vehicle dynamics and powertrain specification, to structural and chassis component design. Assisting with general project management and contributing my experience to ensure the car is delivered to requirement.

    Technical Contributor/Writer

    Authoring technical articles related to motorsport engineering and automotive technologies for magazine and website publication.

    Articles written thus far involve content focused on various technical analyses, a series of in-depth vehicle dynamics articles, modern suspension technology & development, and advanced sensor technology.

  • Gosling Racing & Independent Designs:
  • High quality fabricator of welded motorsport structures.

    Mechanical Design

    This project involved the creation of a complete 3D model and associated 2D drawings for a tubular ROPS (Roll Over Protection Structure) for MSA certification/homologation in the 116 Trophy Racing Series.

  • AP Motorsport:
  • A UK based motorsport and parts distribution company.

    Aerodynamics, Chassis Dynamics and Build Consultation

    Consulting on ongoing aerodynamics and vehicle/chassis dynamics development of their Megane 3 Cup racer. Work undertaken includes component design, part selection and vehicle dynamics consultancy at test & verification sessions at various European circuits including the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

    Components currently under development include suspension and aerodynamic components using SolidWorks FEA and ANSYS FLUENT.

  • Dearman Engine Company:
  • A small yet growing company with an innovative new technology in using the expansion of Liquid Nitrogen to generate power in a tradition IC Engine architecture.

    Mechanical Design

    Design of Liquid Nitrogen (LiN) distribution systems ranging from LiN storage tank to intake system of the Dearman Engine.

    Using SolidWorks CAD suite & PDM, this involved the realisation, packaging and routing of pipework and thermal management systems, including the creation and release of 3D assemblies and 2D drawings with GD&T.

  • Britcar Endurance Series:
  • An endurance motor racing championship in the UK featuring sports and touring cars.

    Race Engineer; 2016 Season

    Assisting the chief race engineer at Hofmann's Motorsport with data logging and analysis, vehicle dynamic and aerodynamic parameter management and general issue solution on their Lotus Europa GT - Racing at various circuits around the UK this was a great opportunity to revisit motorsport and a valuable learning experience at a highly professional team.

  • Ford Motor Company:
  • The first contract obtained by J C-B Engineering Consultants was with Ford Motor Company. A second contract was immediately awarded and sustained a positive and productive relationship until its end.

    Powertrain Design & Release

    Working directly with international Tier 1 suppliers to deliver powertrain components for application in small, high power density turbocharged engines meeting cost, quality, weight and timing targets set by Program Office.

    A broad understanding of materials and manufacturing processes was required across the techniques of casting and machining Aluminium and Steel components, to injection moulding and additive manufactured polymers.

    Tools and software packages such as MS Project, WERS, AVBOM, TeamCenter, CATIA V5, Matlab/Simulink and the development of quality tools such as FMEA, eFeas aided in achieving robust component sign-off.

    Vehicle Design Verification

    Working with functional engineering teams (Powertrain, Chassis, Electrical, Vehicle integration, Durability) to support the efficient sign-off of GPDS gateways from initial concept M1 to FEC. Development and execution of analytical & physical design verification plans involving subjective and objective test methods and data analysis.

    Having graduated Sussex University in July 2013 I obtained a 1st class with honours as a Master of Engineering (MEng) on an Automotive Engineering degree program.

    Shortly after graduating I established my company J C-B Engineering Consultants Limited. with the aim of furthering my own passion in Automotive Engineering. Developing a reputation and respect for my name as a specialist in vehicle and aerodynamics and achieving excellence in high performance road and Motorsport applications.

    In doing so, i wish to contribute to the development of the Automotive Engineering industry to the benefit of OEM, supplier and consumers.

    i am continuing to research, expand and develop in different disciplines to improve my companies depth of knowledge, whilst pushing various product concepts through into production.
